What Hot & Cold is

Hot & Cold is a free puzzle about closeness of meaning. There's no letter grid and no spelling tricks: you type a word, and the game tells you how near it is in meaning to a secret word. You get 🧊 freezing when you're far off, 🔥 blazing when you're within a handful of words, and 🎯 when you land on it. Every guess gets a rank against the full word list, so if the secret is wave, ocean might come back warm while tide burns hot, and each answer nudges you closer to the secret. There are three ways to play. Daily gives every player in the world the same secret word, refreshed at 00:00 UTC, with streaks and a global leaderboard. Endless is unlimited practice, with a new random secret each round plus optional hints, letter-count reveal, and a countdown timer. Challenge brings in friends: pass a link around, and each round everyone in your room hunts the same secret, earning podium-style points that accumulate across rounds. Or switch the room into teams that share one board and chase the word together. The how-to-play guide walks through all three.

How it's built

Every guess is scored against our own map of meaning, built from how words are used across billions of words of text and tuned over many rounds of testing to rank the way players expect. When you guess, the game compares your word's position to the secret's and ranks it against every other word on the list. Ranks are precomputed once, so your #37 is everyone's #37, and there's no per-device variance to argue about.

The word list itself is curated: about 15,000 words, mostly common singular English nouns. Restricting guesses to that list is what keeps the scoring honest, since every valid guess already has a meaningful, precomputed position. Secrets come exclusively from the list's most common entries, so the reveal is never a head-scratcher. The rarer tail is there to give your guesses and hints room to roam.

The daily secret is picked on our servers at 00:00 UTC, never on your device. That keeps it identical for everyone worldwide, and it means the answer can't be datamined out of the app, so nobody can peek at tomorrow's word.

Our approach

Hot & Cold is free to play, and no account is required, since every mode works anonymously. The mobile app has no forced ads: no interstitials, and nothing in the game gated behind watching a video. There is an optional rewarded video on iOS and Android. Watching one banks a streak protection, which covers a missed day so a daily streak survives it, and it adds a small heart badge beside your name on the menu and the leaderboard. Nothing else in the game is locked behind it. Data collection is light, and the details are in our privacy policy.

Who makes it
