Daily word game
Last updated: 2026-07-26
Some habits are worth keeping: coffee, the crossword, one puzzle before the day gets loud. The daily in Hot & Cold is built for exactly that. Every calendar day there is a single secret word, the same one for everyone on the planet, and your job is to find it by meaning rather than by letters. You type a word, it comes back ranked from 🧊 freezing to 🔥 blazing depending on how close it sits in meaning to the answer, and you close the gap one guess at a time. If you like a Wordle-shaped ritual but want to think in ideas instead of spelling, this is the daily to bookmark.
One word, everyone, once a day
The whole point of a daily is that it's shared. At 00:00 UTC the puzzle rolls over and a new secret word goes live for every player at once, so the conversation the next morning is about the same word you wrestled with. That word is chosen on our server, not on your device — which matters more than it sounds. Because the answer never lives in the app until you solve it, nobody can dig through the code to read tomorrow's word or line up the next month of puzzles. You show up, you play the day's puzzle honestly, and so does everyone else.
The heat you see is deterministic, so it's the same for all of us: a guess is ranked among 14,828 words by closeness to the secret, rank #1 being the answer itself. Reach the top 24 and a word glows hot; slip into the top 6 and it's blazing, meaning the secret is right there. You get a generous runway too — up to 500 guesses in a single day's puzzle — so a tricky answer is a puzzle to chew on, not a wall you bounce off after six tries. Stuck? You can spend up to 3 hints per puzzle, each one surfacing a small cluster of near-rank words to nudge you toward the neighborhood.
Streaks, the leaderboard, and giving up gracefully
A daily lives or dies on the streak, and this one counts consecutive UTC days solved — miss a day and it resets, so there's a gentle pull to come back tomorrow. Playing anonymously keeps your streak and stats on the device you're using, which is plenty for most people. If you'd rather compete, an optional Apple or Google sign-in unlocks the global daily leaderboard and syncs your streak and stats across every device you play on, so your phone and your laptop stay in step. Signing in is entirely up to you; nothing about the puzzle itself is locked behind it.
And when a word simply refuses to click, giving up isn't a defeat — it's a reveal. Concede the day's puzzle and the game shows you the top 100 words closest in meaning to the secret, which is honestly one of the most satisfying parts of the whole thing: you get to see the entire semantic neighborhood you were circling and understand exactly why your guesses landed where they did. New to the meaning-not-letters idea? The how to play guide walks through a full round, and the FAQ answers the common "wait, how is this scored?" questions.
Want to keep going after today's puzzle? The endless word game serves a fresh random secret round after round with no cap, and if you'd rather pull friends into the same word, an async word game with friends lets a room share one secret per round on everyone's own schedule. But the daily is the anchor — one word, one day, one small streak-worthy win.
