Word game with friends

Last updated: 2026-07-26

Getting a group into the same word game usually means everyone has to be online at the same moment, which never quite happens. Challenge mode in Hot & Cold skips the scheduling. You create a room, share one link, and everyone who joins plays the same secret word each round — on their own time, whenever they get a spare minute. It's a multiplayer word game without the group-chat coordination: async from the ground up, so it's never a race and no one has to wait around for anyone else.

How playing with friends works

A room is a series of rounds, not a single puzzle. As host, you pick a secret for each round, then send the link to whoever you want in the game. Everyone guesses the same answer, and every guess is ranked by how close it lands in meaning to that secret, scored against 14,828 words from 🥶 freezing all the way to 🌋 blazing. When a round wraps, it hands out podium-style points: the best round score takes the biggest share, second-best takes the next, and so on down the field, the way a Grand Prix pays out places. Those points accumulate round after round until the room resets, so a strong finish today keeps mattering tomorrow. Miss a round entirely and you can still catch the next one — nobody gets locked out for being late.

No spoilers, ever

The reason this stays fun in a group is that the server never lets a spoiler cross between players. As you and your friends chip away at the same word, the only things that travel over the wire are similarity ranks and display names — never the secret, and never a single word anyone actually typed. You'll see that a friend landed a "hot" guess or nudged into the top few, but you'll never see what they guessed, so their progress can't hand you the answer. Everyone works the same puzzle honestly, and the leaderboard reflects who read the meaning best rather than who peeked. As the host you also set the room's rules once, up front: an optional countdown timer that defaults to 5 minutes, whether hints are on or off, and whether the secret's letter count is shown. Hints stay a simple room-wide on/off switch — when they're on, each player still gets up to 3 reveals of their own per round, and give-up shows the top 50 closest words so the round always ends with the answer in view. Want the full ruleset first? It lives on how to play, and strategy tips help you climb the podium in fewer guesses.

Challenge is free in your browser, and it plays the same on the iOS and Android apps. On mobile there's a bonus: an offline challenge-a-bot mode that runs a single Hot & Cold round against a locally generated opponent right on your device — no connection, no room link, a quick way to feel out the format solo. If a shared answer is what you're after but you'd rather everyone worldwide face the same word, the daily word game does exactly that, and endless mode is always there for unlimited solo practice between rounds. When you're ready to gather a group, start a room and drop the link — the rest sorts itself out.
